| The
music |
| Blues,
like jazz, arose in the early years of the twentieth century and
was even more strongly connected with the black community. Its origins
lie in the work songs and dances of the plantation slaves, and it
was influenced by the traditions of West Africa where most of the
slaves came from. |
 |
|
The music
involved repetition of simple themes, leaving plenty of room for
improvisation, and the strong syncopated rhythms which are important
to jazz, ragtime, rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll and other kinds
of popular music. Much modern rock music can be traced back to
the acoustic blues of 1920s and 30s musicians such as Robert Johnson,
Big Bill Broonzie and Blind Willie McTell . All were fine guitarists.
|
|
More sophisticated
forms of blues can be heard in the jazz music of Duke Ellington, and
there was always a lot of "crossover" between blues and other
popular styles such as Western Swing, country and bluegrass music.
The growth of recording and radio from the 1920s had a lot to
do with this.
